How to Take Care of a Wood Dining Table - Pod Furniture Ireland

At Pod Furniture we believe in the longevity of wood. High quality wooden tables can last for generations, making them a sustainable choice. All natural wood dining tables require a degree of maintenance. Here are some tips for keeping your table looking as fresh as the day you bought it.

Cleaning:

  • Dust the table regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth or a microfiber duster to prevent the buildup of dirt and dust.
  • Ensure the table is cleared after every meal.
  • Use a slightly damp, clean cloth to wipe down the table's surface to remove dirt and residue. Avoid using excessive water, as it can damage the wood.
  • For tougher stains, you can use a mild wood cleaner or a mixture of water and a few drops of mild dish soap such as washing up liquid. Never use harsh detergents or sprays, especially those with bleach in them. Never use scrubbers such as steel wool.

Spill Cleanup:

  • Wipe up spills immediately to prevent them from seeping into the wood and causing stains or warping.
  • Use a dry or slightly damp cloth to blot the spilled liquid, working from the edges of the spill toward the center.

Protection:

  • We always recommend using place mats and coasters to protect the wood surface from hot dishes, water rings, and scratches caused by cutlery.
  • Consider using felt or rubber pads under items like vases, decorative objects, or lamps to prevent them from scratching the table.

Avoid Direct Sunlight:

  • Position your dining table away from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause the wood to fade and age prematurely.

Temperature and Humidity Control:

  • Maintain a stable indoor environment with moderate temperature and humidity levels. Extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause wood to expand or contract, leading to cracks or warping.

Regular Oiling:

  • Modern built homes are generally airtight so treating your table with an oil that is relevant to the wood at least twice per year is ideal.
  • Use the correct oil specifically for your wood and wood stain. Once you have the correct oil, we recommend dabbing the oil onto a non-absorbent cloth, and wiping with the grain of the wood. Leave the oil to absorb for 24 hours before using your dining table again.
  • Oiling the table will keep is looking fresh and

Taking care of a wood dining table requires ongoing attention and maintenance, but with proper care, your table can remain a beautiful and functional centerpiece in your home for many years.
